The Alchemist of Paris edition by M C Dulac Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I adored this book! By the way, I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This story is like a fragile pressed rose found in an old book. Old, but still beautiful. It starts a bit slowly but then it unfolded and I was hooked.
I have to admit I was blindsided by the end. I felt kinda stupid, but I read scientific stuff at work so much that I read otherwise I simply read to enjoy the story. This story made me think. What would it be like to live hundreds of years without aging? What would it be like to have to reinvent yourself every 30 years or so? What would it be like to make your own gold? To live in constant fear of discovery?
The story stops before it reaches our time.
I would expect it to be harder to obtain the anonymity one would need in a time of retinal scans and electronic surveillance.
I loved this book and I bet you will too!
This story is about a maid named Elise and her employer Albert Price. Price is a scientist and has Elise run errands for him. She begins to wonder what this man is up to. Will Elise find out what her employer is doing in his lab? This story is told from the POV of Elise. The story is well written and a pleasure to read. You will be turning pages to find out what happens next. The characters of Elise and Price will have you believing in true friendship and that everyone needs to have a companion to talk things through. I highly recommend this book as one that should be on your to-be-read list at the top! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! This book is one of the best I've read so far---- it was so hard to put down. This is history, science, travelogue, suspense, love and a subtle hint of romance all rolled into one. I loved being transported from the present century to the 19th century and then back to the present. This is indeed a masterpiece from a master storyteller. The writer makes it easy for the reader to role play the protagonists, while the reader gets lost in the adventures from two different worlds. I am looking forward to reading more of this author's works.
I received this book free in exchange for my honest review.
I have never read anything by this author. I was introduced via a book review email I receive regularly. I selected this particular book based on the genre, title and subject matter.
Overall it is a great book. I enjoyed the mix of modern with historical fiction. The most enjoyable parts were those set in historic Paris through the eyes of the housemaid, Elise. It started a bit slow, but once we find the diary, I’m engrossed.
I docked one star for the following I found the romance too fast paced for the time period, the transitions between the modern century in the beginning and the 19th century need a bit of work, and it isn't in the same league as other memorable books. I certainly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction, foreign travel, or possibly even science fiction.
I received a copy from Jay's Choosy Bookworm in exchange for my honest opinion. I selected the book and have provided my review without any guidance or direction from others.
i read the work but was disappointed with the story. It begins with an individual who was hired to find an old building in Paris. She was familiar with the town and had been there previously. The problem was that there was no record of the mysterious house in the archives of the city. Ultimately she find the place, hidden behind a false front, and explores the extensive grounds of house and adjacent structures. Eventually she finds a 19th century manuscript that describes the house in the early nineteenth century and the travels of a woman who was sent to help someone explore the chemistry and artifacts of that time. After many pages of description of Paris and the man who lives in the house, we discover that she, in the 21st century, is that same woman who worked at the location in the 19th century. At least one other individual of the manuscript survives into the 21st century. Why did I did not assign the highest rating to this work?
Most of the book takes place in the early 19th century. The story is somewhat interesting but not one I would to reread again. How a 19th century woman is still living in the 21st century, and the connection between the 19th and 21st centuries needs further work. It is only briefly sketched. Also, and this was most important for me, I felt that the survival of people from an earlier time is interesting but it would be vastly more interesting if the author explained why this survival is important for the present. Hence I can only give it three stars.
I enjoyed this book very much. It was difficult to put it down until I finished reading the complete book.
Engrossing tale based on sound research and a highly original plot. Dulac's refined prose will effortlessly lead you by the hand through the lamplit streets of a historical Paris that is vividly returned to life through her touching story of the alchemist.
I enjoyed this book so much. It was intriguing, and kept me hooked, even though I kind of knew where it was going. The characters were very relatable, and I enjoyed the writing style. I've got the next book waiting in line to read, and I'm looking forward to it.
